This is one of the biggest questions when someone is buying a home. Everyone has their preference, but what is your? One story or two stories? There are definite advantages and disadvantages to both options. If you do not know which is right for you, then you have come to the right place. I will try to help you with the decision by providing both the pros and the cons of both options. This article will help you make a good decision and will help take away some of the pain of making a lifelong decision. If you make the wrong one, you can be stuck with it for a very long time, and no one wants that.
We will start with both the pros and cons of a single level house. The first and foremost good thing about a one story house is the fact that it is a lot easier to get around in. The stairs in a two story home can be a burden for a lot of people. It is much easier to walk on level ground than to have to climb up stairs. A lot of people like the fact that when they get older, they can still freely move around the house and do not have to worry about any climbing. On the other hand, children tend to enjoy two-story homes a lot more than one-story ones. Plus, when those children get older you can set your A/C to direct airflow away from parts of the house you are not using anymore. Privacy is also a huge issue with single level homes. Everyone is on the same level in these houses and it can be hard to get the privacy one may want. Even pets can run around the whole house very easily. Also, single story homes tend to be, theoretically, more expensive that two story ones. This is because the house needs to spread out so there is more roofing and foundation needed.
Now, for two story homes, the issues mentioned above do not become a problem. Privacy may not be as big an issue with a two level house because there will be rooms on multiple levels. A lot of couples choose to have the master bedroom on the lower level. This is a great idea because all the children rooms will be upstairs, away from you. Then, when the children get older, as I said, you can direct the airflow from upstairs and put it down. Also like I said, a two-story home may be cheaper than a one. There is less of an area needed with a two-story home and this can make it cheaper. Of course, none of these advantages matter if you will need to go up and down the stairs a lot. This can be difficult when you get older and may severely hinder your ability to get around your house.
Whatever you choose, you should be happy with your pick. You don't want to live in a house for years if you don't like it. Make the right decision for you and your family.
